There are many others that I haven't seen but these are the two that I know. I think it is important to teach philosophy on campus because there are many people in the United States who don't understand what it means. Philosophy is more than just a subject that has nothing to do with the actual sciences.
Logic is the study of deductive reasoning. In other words, a person can think of an argument as consisting of an explanation followed by an argument that shows how the explanation is true. A good logical argument needs to show why the conclusion should be true and not false. Logic is basically about finding an explanation for how something must be true, how it must follow logically, and how the observation that it is true can be seen as possible or even certain. To use logic, you must first have an explanation of how something must be true and how it follows logically. Reason is all about understanding what is true and what can be true or not true. Why? Because if something is true then we are able to predict the outcome of the event or occurrence. How? Because things follow from each other so logically, we can always conclude that it is true. Goodness, on the other hand, is a feeling or intuition that something is right or proper. If something is not right, then the person doesn't feel good about it. When two things are either right or wrong, there is a feeling of rightness or wrongness associated with them. It may be a pleasant feeling, but it is also something that we must tolerate. I have met many people who said they are against things like politics, economics, and religion. And yet, in their hearts, they want to support them. They feel bad about it but in their hearts they think that it's better to have something in life than not having it at all. Logic can get a person to become a conservative, but it cannot lead a person to believe that there is no god. Even though our senses tell us that things like food, sex, and money are good, they aren't. If we go without it, we become unhappy and lose interest in the world. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No matter how nice something is, if someone is not getting pleasure from it, it isn't beautiful. So next time you see something that appeals to you, take a closer look.
